of LANZ Eric
SWITZERLAND, 1994, 00:09:00
Production : LANZ Eric
Genre : Video art
Keyword : Body, Gesture, Installation, Editing
Summary :
Sanding down, cutting, pouring : gestures made mostly with every day tools, and filmed in close-ups on video. Magnified to a great scale, they arouse - for instance, the filing of one's nails - the mixture of embarrassment and fascination which accompanies bodily sensations in a hygienic culture. Eric LANZ creates a tension by obsessively repeating those seemingly ritualized gestures, and then immediately disrupts it through unexpected formal cuts. Between rhyme and cuts, a whole new field opens up, in which gestures are separated from their meaning. (Excerpt from a text by Hans-Rudolph REUST, in the catalogue of the exhibition "Et passim", Berne Kunsthalle, 1994).
