Summary :
Born in Aix-en-Provence, Cézanne went back there after a few trips and then would not leave, spending his days painting in his studio or outside. He chose a beauty spot that had long been appreciated by local painters, the near Mount Sainte-Victoire, and treated this motif nearly sixty times, from different points of view, with different styles, and every season. The mount’s singular shape, that shows the region’s dramatic geological changes, the legends about it, history, folklore, all contributed to make it a “sacred mountain”. Cézanne explored through these paintings some pictural principles in reaction to the prevailing impressionism. “I am attracted to boundless things in nature. I go very slow, nature opening up to me in a very complex manner.”
