Matter is not spread out in space and indifferent to time ; it is not a constant that goes totally inert through a uniform length of time. It does not go through time like something which wears out and scatters, either. Not only is it sensitive to rhythm, but it exists, in the fullest sense, on the very level of rhythm, and the time in which it develops certain delicate phenomnenons is an undulating one, a time which can only be uniform through the regularity of its frequency.
