Summary :
This film is part of a series called “Birthplaces of creation”. Through the presentation of a work of art, each episode explores a place that gave birth to a major artistic or cultural movement, at a precise moment in history.
As Jacques-Louis David presents « Le Serment des Horaces » in Rome in 1785, that painting becomes a manifesto for the new classicism. All around Europe, churches and palaces are built like grecian temples. The film explores that aesthetic and philosophical turning point : man’s ultimate goal is not the pursuit of pleasure any more, but virtue and the fulfilment of duty.
