Summary :
Gordon MATTA-CLARK was born in 1943 in New York City. He died at the age of 35. What is most remembered from his very modern work is his "cuttings" of forms and volumes from abandoned buildings. The purpose of that practise, beyond its formal aspect, was to liberate dwelling spaces from their social and utilitarian restraints. In 1975, in Paris, Gordon MATTA-CLARK made a piece for the Biennial, which was called CONICAL INTERSECT and consisted in cutting out a giant cone from the building of the 29, rue Beaubourg. Marc PETITJEAN is a videomaker and photographer. He had already been following the transformation of the neighbourhood and the story of the 29, rue Beaubourg for many years, and he filmed Gordon's two-weeks' work. The film shows the encounter between the videomaker's long-lasting photographic observation and Gordon's urgent creative process, on the same building.
