Summary :
This film is part of a series called “Birthplaces of creation”. Through the presentation of a work of art, each episode explores a place that gave birth to a major artistic or cultural movement, at a precise moment in history.
In Flanders, which then belong to the Duke of Burgundy, Bruges is one of the most flourishing cities in Europe. A rich italian merchant, Giovanni Arnolfini, commissions Jan Van Eyck to paint a portrait on the occasion of his marriage. The technique of oil painting, choice of the panel and portrait, the emergence of an art that does not serve the Church alone any more, make it a founding work of modern painting.
